The short answer

For most people, yes. Palm Coast pairs Florida's lack of a state income tax with homestead protections, two AdventHealth hospitals in town and Mayo Clinic about 70 minutes north, more than 130 miles of trails, about ten golf courses nearby and mild winters (January averages a 65-degree high). Nearly 30 percent of residents are 65 or older, so services for retirees are well established. The trade-offs are home insurance costs, hurricane season and needing a car, since the county's door-to-door bus doesn't leave Flagler County.

Taxes

Florida has no state income tax, so Social Security, pensions and retirement withdrawals aren't taxed by the state. Once you homestead your Palm Coast home (file by March 1), you get up to $51,411 off its assessed value for 2026, and Save Our Homes limits how much the assessed value can rise each year. Flagler County also offers an extra exemption for qualifying low-income homeowners 65 and older (2026 household income limit: $38,686); ask the Property Appraiser which taxing authorities apply it. A homestead amendment is on today's ballot, and my Amendment 3 explainer shows what it would change, city by city. Moving from another Florida home? You can carry up to $500,000 of your Save Our Homes savings with you; see how portability works.

Healthcare

Palm Coast has two hospitals. AdventHealth Palm Coast on SR 100 opened in 2002, has a stroke center and an emergency department designated age-friendly, and added the Freytag Cancer Center in 2024. AdventHealth Palm Coast Parkway opened in August 2023 with 100 private beds, an emergency department and a stroke center, and roughly doubled the county's hospital capacity. For specialists, Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville is about 70 minutes north and Halifax Health in Daytona Beach about 40 minutes south.

Staying active

The city has more than 130 miles of connected trails for walking and biking, a dozen parks, and about ten golf courses in and around town, from city-owned Palm Harbor to the private clubs at Hammock Dunes and Grand Haven. The beach is 10 to 15 minutes from most neighborhoods. Flagler Auditorium seats nearly 1,000 for concerts and shows, and the county's Senior Services program runs a weekday senior center with lunch, exercise and outings.

Where retirees buy

Many retirees choose one-story homes in the original sections, with no HOA and a short drive to everything. Others want amenities and someone else handling the lawn: Grand Haven, Plantation Bay and the Hammock communities have no age limits, while Reverie at Palm Coast, Freedom at Sawmill Branch and The American Village are marketed as 55+ communities, and Del Webb is planning one near Flagler Beach. See my 55+ communities guide and downsizing guide.

The trade-offs

Home insurance is the biggest one. Premiums depend heavily on the age of the roof, wind mitigation and flood zone, so I get insurance quotes early, before you fall in love with a house. Hurricane season runs June through November, though Northeast Florida sees hurricanes about half as often as South Florida; read how often hurricanes hit Palm Coast. And you'll want a car: the county's door-to-door bus ($2 each way, for riders over 60) stays within Flagler County, so trips to Mayo or Daytona mean driving.

My take

Many of my clients retire here after vacationing nearby for years, and what they tell me they like most is that Palm Coast is calm without being remote. If you're weighing it, take a few days, drive the trails and the beach, tour a couple of neighborhoods and a 55+ community, and get an insurance quote on a real house. I'm happy to plan that visit with you.
