As a long-time resident, local expert, and dad who never misses a chance to walk the sandy shores with my kids (or grab a coffee at Yes), I know how much we all care about the pulse of Flagler Beach. If you’re buying, selling, or just living the salt life, it’s always good to have the real story on what’s happening in our town. Here’s the latest:
1. Pier Construction: Big Progress, New Timelines
If you’ve been driving by the pier lately, you can’t miss the buzz of activity. After a short pause to protect some of our resident sea turtles, work has resumed with new energy on the $16 million pier rebuild. The project includes a steel-framed platform parallel to the old structure, making it safer for workers and giving us a glimpse into how the new 800-foot concrete pier will come together. Expect the new design to stand taller and tougher against those big Atlantic storms—ten feet higher than before! While there have been some delays, the city and contractors are working hard to update the schedule and keep construction safe and on track for a late 2026 finish.
2. Beach Renourishment: A Boost for Our Shoreline
Beach days just aren’t the same when the dunes are low, but relief is in sight: Flagler County is set to begin a major beach and dune rebuilding project stretching 5.5 miles from North 7th Street to Varn Park. The sand—1.8 million cubic yards of it—will come from offshore, and the funding (almost $36 million) is secured thanks to state and federal grants. With permits and easements in place, the county expects the work to kick off as soon as October, but it may slide into early 2026. Just a heads-up: while this project will give us several more good years of beachfront, keeping these improvements long-term will take a unified management plan from both the city and county.
3. New Safety Lights and Pedestrian Crossings: Safer Steps for Everyone
Whether I’m out for a morning run or chasing after my two kids, I’m grateful for safer crossings. Good news: The Florida Department of Transportation has activated three new Pedestrian Hybrid Beacons (PHBs) along busy A1A (South Third, South Eighth, and North Fifth Streets). These signals stay dark until someone pushes the button—then drivers get a flashing warning to slow down and stop, making it much safer for locals and visitors crossing to the beach. Please, stay alert and help everyone enjoy Flagler safely!
4. Downtown Paving Wraps Up: Open Roads Again!
After the water main break earlier this summer, S. Central Avenue and the surrounding intersections endured rolling closures and plenty of construction noise. I’m happy to report: the paving is finally done, new curb ramps are in at Moody Blvd and S. 2nd Street, and all roads are now open. The city reminds us that crosswalk striping is coming soon, but you can now visit the beach, shops, or even your favorite realtor again without detours!
As a proud member of this community for nearly two decades, I love bringing you these updates and helping you call North Florida home. Want the inside scoop on neighborhoods, construction, or the latest on local living? Let’s grab a coffee and talk!
