There's something magical about picking out your own Christmas tree that you just can't replicate with an artificial one. After nearly two decades of making North Florida home and creating holiday traditions with my family, I can tell you that the experience of choosing and cutting your own tree—or even just selecting a fresh Fraser fir at a local lot—creates memories that stick with your kids forever.
While Palm Coast itself doesn't have cut-your-own tree farms (our Florida climate makes growing traditional Christmas trees a challenge), we're fortunate to be surrounded by some fantastic options within an easy drive. Whether you want the full farm experience of cutting your own tree or prefer the convenience of fresh pre-cut options close to home, I've put together this guide to help you find the perfect Christmas tree for your family.
Santa's Christmas Tree Forest – Eustis (1 Hour)

This 17-acre working tree farm features over 17,000 trees and offers something special—you can take a hayride through the fields to find your perfect tree, or walk if you prefer the exercise.

-
Hayride tours through 17 acres
-
Choose and cut your own (they provide saws)
-
Pre-cut northern trees also available
-
Activities for kids (giant bounce pillow, maze, petting zoo on select days)

Severts Tree Farm Locations – St. Augustine & Ponte Vedra (30-40 Minutes)
For mountain-fresh Fraser firs without the drive to North Carolina, Severts Tree Farm is my go-to recommendation. This family operation has been bringing fresh trees from the Blue Ridge Mountains to Florida since 1979.

St. Augustine (US-1):
1370 Highway US-1, St. Augustine, FL
Distance: 30-35 minutes north
Phone: (904) 384-8034
Nocatee/Ponte Vedra:
2400 Palm Valley Road, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL
Distance: 35-40 minutes north
Phone: (904) 384-8034
Hours: Typically 9 AM - 9 PM daily (opening mid-November 2025)

Why I recommend them:
-
Fresh Fraser firs straight from North Carolina
-
Multiple shipments throughout the season (trees stay fresh)
-
Wreaths and garland also available
-
Family-owned operation with knowledgeable staff
-
Convenient hours
-
Multiple locations
These aren't "choose and cut," but the trees are incredibly fresh—they receive shipments throughout December, so you're getting quality even if you wait until mid-December.
Local Convenience Options – Palm Coast & Flagler Area
Several local retailers set up seasonal lots with fresh trees right here in town:
Home Improvement Stores:
-
Lowe's Home Improvement – Port Orange and Palm Coast locations
-
The Home Depot – Daytona Beach area locations
These typically open their garden centers with Christmas tree tents around Thanksgiving and offer both real and artificial options.
Temporary Lots:
Watch for Severts Tree Farm pop-up lots and other seasonal vendors in Palm Coast shopping centers—these often appear in the same locations year after year at major intersections and shopping plazas.
Beyond the Tree: Making It a Full Experience
After nearly 20 years of doing this with my family, here's what I've learned about making tree shopping a memorable experience rather than just an errand:
For the Full Farm Experience:
What to bring:
-
Closed-toe shoes (essential for walking in fields)
-
Gloves for handling trees
-
Rope or bungee cords for securing tree to vehicle
-
Blanket or tarp to protect your car
-
Measuring tape (measure your ceiling height before you go!)
-
Camera for family photos
-
Snacks and water (especially for kids)
Timing tips:
-
Go early in the season for best selection
-
Visit on a weekday if possible (less crowded)
-
Check weather—cooler days make the experience more enjoyable
-
Allow 2-3 hours for the full experience
For Pre-Cut Lot Shopping:
What to look for:
-
Fresh trees (needles should be green and flexible)
-
Strong tree scent
-
Minimal needle drop when you tap the trunk
-
Recently cut stump (fresh cut is lighter in color)
-
Ask when the next shipment arrives
Pro questions to ask:
-
When was this batch cut?
-
When's your next shipment?
-
What's your freshness guarantee?
-
Do you offer delivery?
Florida-Specific Tree Care Tips
Our warm Florida climate means you need to take extra care to keep your tree fresh:
From the lot to your living room:
-
Fresh cut: Have the lot make a fresh cut, or cut 1-2 inches off the trunk yourself at home
-
Water immediately: Place in water within 2 hours of cutting
-
Keep it hydrated: Check water daily—trees can drink a gallon per day initially
-
Location matters: Keep away from heat vents, fireplaces, and direct sunlight
-
AC is your friend: Keeping your home cool helps the tree last longer
Making it last:
With proper care, even in Florida's climate, your tree should stay fresh through Christmas. I've had trees last 4+ weeks when properly maintained.
Why It Matters: Creating Traditions
Look, I know it's easier to pull an artificial tree from the garage. But there's something about the whole process—the drive, letting the kids pick the tree, the smell of fresh pine in your living room—that makes Christmas feel real.
My teenagers still get excited about tree shopping day. We make it an event: hot chocolate in thermoses, Christmas music in the car, lunch at a local spot, and the tree expedition. Those photos of my kids standing next to "their" tree at age 5, then 10, then 15—that's the stuff that matters.
Special Mention: What About Living Trees?
If you want a tree you can plant after Christmas, Ergle Christmas Tree Farm in Dade City (about 1.5 hours) offers potted living trees in several varieties. While it's a bit farther, they specialize in trees you can plant in your Florida landscape.
Another option: Palm Coast's Christmas Tree Recycling Event (typically early January at the Palm Coast Fuel Depot) lets you recycle your tree and receive a free 3-gallon native Florida tree or shrub in exchange. It's not quite the same as a living Christmas tree, but it's a great way to give back and add to your landscape.

Make It Happen
The tree shopping window is short—most farms and lots operate from late November through mid-December. Don't wait until December 23rd and wonder why selection is limited.
My recommendation: Block out a Saturday in early December, make it a family event, and create some memories. Whether you drive to Watson's to cut your own or hit Severts for a beautiful Fraser fir, you're creating the kind of tradition your kids will want to continue with their own families someday.
